Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill Passed in the Senate

|
The U.S. Senate passed a landmark immigration reform bill yesterday that seeks to implement sweeping reforms across all areas of U.S. immigration law. The measure passed by a vote of 68 to 32, with 14 Republicans and 2 Independents joining all Democrats in support of the Reform Bill. The Reform Bill will provide undocumented immigrants in the U.S. an avenue for gaining legal status, and eventually citizenship. The Bill also reforms both non-immigrant and immigrant visa programs, as well as increases security efforts along the southern border. Approval in the Senate means the Reform Bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives with a strong showing of bipartisan support. The Reform Bill will likely face much greater scrutiny in the Republican-controlled House as many Republican Representatives hold strong objections against comprehensive reform of the immigration system in favor of a more piecemeal approach, beginning with strengthening border security.
